Six secret coves at sunrise — Ibiza, before the world wakes up

Ibiza isn't only the island of all-night parties. It's also a place of soft mornings, turquoise water and beaches the locals keep for themselves. In August, when the rest of the island vibrates day and night, there's a different rhythm to be caught — between five and eight in the morning, before the world wakes up.

1. Cala d'en Serra

A small cove in the north, reached by a winding dirt road. Crystalline water, white sand, almost no one before nine. Take coffee in a thermos and a book you don't actually need to read. The way the light moves across the cliffs at sunrise is the postcard you don't take.

2. Cala Xuclar

Wild, between rock and pine. The sun rises late behind the cliffs but the light is the gentlest of the island. Come at six and stay until the first paddleboarders arrive at ten. There's a tiny chiringuito for grilled fish at noon — but you'll be long gone by then.

3. Aigües Blanques

The official nudist beach of the island, and at sunrise, simply the most peaceful. The cliffs are dramatic, the swim is straight off the rocks, and on a calm morning the water is still warm from the night before. Bring a thin blanket — the breeze can lift after seven.

4. Cala Mastella

A miniature cove in San Carles, with the legendary El Bigotes shack at the back. The shack opens at noon — but if you come at sunrise, the cove is yours: the wooden boats lined up, the smell of pine, the silence. Then drive ten minutes for breakfast at La Paloma.

5. Atlantis (Sa Pedrera)

Reached only on foot, by a steep path down the cliff. Old quarry pools cut into the rock by the Romans, then later by hippies. Arrive before dawn with a torch; the descent is dramatic and the silence on arrival is absolute. The island's most photographed dawn — and still, somehow, almost empty.

6. Cala d'Hort, with Es Vedrà

The most famous cliff on the island faces the cove. At sunrise, with the sea still pearled and the rock backlit, it's the kind of view that makes you forget your camera. A coffee at the small shack on the headland, then back to the villa before anyone has noticed you left.

The thermos, the blanket, the morning

A practical word: bring water, fruit, a thin blanket. The mornings are warm but the wind can pick up. Wear a layer you can shed. The reward is simple — the island as it was before tourism, returned to you for two hours.
